The Diocese of St Mary the Virgin is an independent jurisdiction within the Reformed Ethiopian Catholic Church of Southern Africa (RECCSA). Our Diocese is committed to propagating the teachings of our Lord, inspiring a love for Christ, a passion for righteousness, and a consciousness of the human race's connection to God and fellow human beings.

Under the leadership of the Most Rev BC Mente, we are focused on expanding the Kingdom of God through the planting of new churches.

As an independent jurisdiction within RECCSA, the Diocese of St Mary the Virgin is not part of the Roman Catholic Church but adheres to the traditional Catholic faith, while maintaining its autonomy and self-governance. We are a community of Ethiopian Catholics, united by a common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and a commitment to the trustworthiness of the Holy Scriptures.

We acknowledge the authority of the Reformed Ethiopian Catholic Church of Southern Africa and strive to uphold its Fundamental Declarations in all our practices. Our core beliefs and organizational structure are rooted in the Canons of our Diocese, which provide guidance and clarity for our congregations and leadership.

Our Diocese is composed of the St Paul Archdeaconry in Gqeberha/Kariega, the St John the Evangelist Archdeaconry in the Western Cape, and the St Andrew Archdeaconry in the former Transkei and East London. We have established six churches within our Diocese, each dedicated to serving its community with love and humility.

About us

The Ethiopian movement has its genesis in 1883 when black clergy in reaction to racial exclusion and inequality practised within the predominantly missionary churches in South Africa, set up African churches.
